An index that combines the unemployment and inflation rates. The index was devised in the 1970s when both inflation and unemployment rose sharply. It is based on the assumption that both a higher rate of unemployment and a worsening of inflation create economic and social costs for a country and its citizens. The misery index is linked to consumer confidence-the lower the index, in general, the more confident consumers tend to be.
