Air Pocket Stock

When an airplane hits an air pocket it plunges dramatically. A stock that falls sharply, usually in the wake of such negative news as unexpected poor earnings, is also called an air pocket.

The rapid drops of air pocket stocks are generally followed by a gradual return to the original price level as the issuing company works to calm investors. In most cases, the rapid selling was an overreaction by the market.
